About Spinney Freelance

Spinney Freelance is a one-man organization, but don’t let that deter you. Development is my passion, and I’d tout myself at being pretty good at it. I have a full time job as a Senior Web Developer at a Buffalo-based Marketing Communications agency, Gelia and I’ll apply my experience that I gain every day on the job to whatever projects may come my way.

The beauty of freelance work is that I get to expand my skillset and be more than just a developer. I am also required to be a project manager, a copywriter, a designer, an accountant, etc. These challenges make for a very exciting environment that truly brings out my creative side, and merges perfectly with my technical side. I believe in a process based approach to any project, no matter how big or small, and I look forward to the opportunity to working with you.

The Spinney Freelance Process

If you decide that working with me is the right thing for you, first and foremost, thank you! Here, you’ll find the process-based approach that I like to take when working on a project, and how a typical workflow will go. This may not be a typical project workflow, but I find that it works well in a freelance-based environment.

STEP 1: DEFINE THE PROJECT

Without definition, how does either party know what we are working on? Before any type of an estimate or quote can be given, some type of basic definition of what the project entails must be agreed upon.

STEP 2: AGREE UPON SCOPE, AND ESTIMATE

These 2 items go hand in hand. Part of the estimation process involves taking the project definition, and applying numbers to it, then, making sure that anything outside what is defined is covered by out of scope costs. This step may have several iterations until everything is agreed upon by all parties. This step will also determine what the final deliverables are.

STEP 3: DEFINE ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND TIMELINES

To ensure that that project runs smoothly, and all parties know who is responsible for what, when, this step is crucial before any development work can begin. This is also a good time to decide what solution will work best for tracking documents (Google Drive, emails, cloud content manager, etc…).

STEP 4: DEVELOPMENT

This may be a time of darkness for you, the client, but don’t let that scare you. This is when the actual work is being done, and that’s a good thing! Throughout development, it may be agreed upon to have some time interval based check-ins from myself to notify of how development is going. That way, you aren’t completely in the dark.

STEP 5: CLIENT TESTING

This is where development isn’t necessarily over, but it’s time for you to get to play with the product. See how you like it, try and break it, this is your time to provide feedback. Any bugs that crop up here will be fixed before final launch.

STEP 6: FINAL BUG FIXING/TESTING

Fix any extra bugs that may exists, and perform one final round of testing. Once you give your approval – we are good to launch.

STEP 7: LAUNCH

STEP 8: MONITOR

This step, although technically optional, is highly recommended. Launching anything on the web does not mean it is done. You should constantly review and improve.
